Summer’s Hottest Home Design Trends

Home design trends change with the seasons, and it can be hard to know what’s in and what’s out.  We’ve rounded up the hottest trends, many of them influencing choices in new home construction and laying a great foundation for new homeowners. Summer 2019 ushers in bright colors, natural materials and an urge to let the outdoors, in.

Crisp, White Interiors

All-white design themes are easy to accomplish in kitchens and baths where tile, stone, cabinetry and linens come in many shades of white. White walls are gaining in popularity again, too, and are a great backdrop for photo galleries, artwork or rustic wood finishes. Gray tones that were all the rage just recently are slowly being replaced with brighter whites.

Natural, Organic Elements

Wood floors and stone counter tops are classic design features, but summer brings them in with a little more flash. Softer, more natural wood tones are gaining popularity with raw, unfinished wood accents providing a firm compliment for what’s underfoot. Natural stone is popular, too, in light tones that brighten a room and real plants (not the faux kind that just gather dust) are a great way to add living, breathing color. Choose a big potted plant, like a yucca, for a sun-drenched corner or add succulents to a tabletop.

Open Shelving

Open shelving lets you display your favorite things, especially those you use every day. Gone are the glass-faced cabinets hiding Grandma’s crystal. This summer brings open shelves in reclaimed wood or metal that conveniently hold your best coffee mug, cereal bowls and well-placed accessories at the ready. They also help walls to appear more open and much brighter, especially when kept tidy.

Mixed Textures

Texture is everywhere this summer, from the soft rug under your feet to the ribbed upholstery on your sofa and the fine embroidery on your throw pillow. Mixing textiles, especially in neutral tones, is visually interesting and promotes peaceful, easy style.

Outdoor Living Spaces

This is a design trend that gains popularity each year as the temperature starts heating up.  Furniture designed for outdoor use now looks just as plush and comfortable as your living room furniture.  Arrange your deck or patio with couches, ottomans, and end tables just like you would your main living area inside.  Add an indoor/outdoor rug, and you’ve got a whole new place to kick back. The overriding theme this summer is comfort, so turn your outdoor space into a place you’d choose to spend the best stay-cation ever!

Keeping up with the trends can be difficult, but it always comes down to what suits your personal style. Summer 2019 is bright, airy and filled with natural elements, but it’s also about comfort and ease of use. We hope these trends help you to find the right design balance in your home.
